- What was known as "the big fight" at Aughnacloy, to distinguish it from the lesser affrays constantly occurring at fairs and markets, took place on 30th October 1818. The fight arose from ill-feeling between the Tyrone and Truagh ( Co Monaghan ) men over some Protestants that had been beaten at Armagh races, and apparently the orange party were determined, if opportunity offered, to avenge it at the Aughnacloy races. Towards evening an hour before dark, about the time of the "saddle races" i.e., the race for which a saddle was first prize, the distubance commenced. A Roman Catholic or two were beaten on Aughnacloy street, and there was promiscous stone throwing between the parties, which continued over Tully hill as far as Tully bridge. The Cannteel men were leaders on the protestant side, and a number of the Aughnacloy Yeomanry who had been called out as a special guard to preserve order at the races, being provided with arms and ammunitions, joined their co-religionists.
