    ribbon. The shape of the cap was somewhat like the child's sunbonnet of the present day. It fitted tightly around the face and covered the ears. The degree of whiteness and stiffness of the cap (I used to hear) testified to the ability or otherwise of the true eater as a laundress.
    I often heard it said that it was the custom for girls to wear the white cap as soon a they were married. Later a black cap of similar shape decorated with loops of narrow black and purple ribbon was worn. This was called the "Dress Cap." Fringed shawls of various colours draped cornerwise over the shoulders was the usual wear for women and
