- In the townland of Cursiff, near where I live, there was a hedge school some years ago. About twenty scholars attended it. The man who taught there was Master Dan Beirne, a native of Ballagh, Hillstreet, Drumsna, Co. Roscommon.
They used only the English language in those days. The ruins of the school are still to be seen in John Beirne's field. The standards taught there were from infants up to sixth. The pupils used slates, and the ink was made from the Elder. They wrote with quills. The master made the quill pens for the pupils. The Master was paid on the results of the examination. No pupil could go in for an examination if he did not complete a hundred days in the year. the books used then were much cheaper and much easier than those used at present.- Collector
