- In former times very many remedies were tried for the cure of the toothache and other ailments. To cure the toothache smoking a pipe and rubbing the tooth with alum was considered good. Another cure was to burn paper on a plate and put the burned paper on the tooth. "Thrush" was a disease that used to come on the tongue. A posthumous child is said to have the cure of this disease. It was cured by blowing the (breadth) breath into the mouth three times. Another cure was to mix boric powder and glycerine together and rub it on the tongue.
