- In former times marriages most frequently took place during Shrove time - this is the period between the Twelfth day and Ash Wednesday - in this district but that period is loosing ground as a distinctive period for marrying. the tendency latterly is to have most marriages during the summer months. The old-fashioned custom of having the match settled for the man and woman is still in vogue especially in this rural district.Dowries are still looked for and given but the dowry now-a-days is confined to money. Util about a half a century a common form of dowry was household lined, a bed and bedclothes and a cow amongst the farming community.The very old people remember marriages taking place in the bride's house, but in recent times all marriages are celebrated in the church.All the guests both those invited by the bridegroom as well as those invited by the bride assemble at the bride's home and the the marriage procession sets out for the church. when the ceremony is celebrated all again return to the bride's home where(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
