- In the year 1848 there fell very heavy snow. It fell on the 9th of February. Snow was about five feet deep on the ground. It stayed on the ground for about three months. Four hundred English soldiers were camped in tents in Bessborough Park. Three of them died of the cold. Another man was lost up in the hills near Harristown. When he was found he was dead. He was dead for a month before he was found. A great number of cows and horses were lost on the farmers. When it thawed three came very big floods. All the young wheat and crops were destroyed. A great number of houses were flooded.
