Potatoes were eaten at every meal. They were taken with buttermilk and salt. They were boiled in a large pot and then strained and put out in a wicker basket, called a "kish". This was placed in the middle of the floor and the members of the household sat on the floor and peeled the potatoes with their fingers, dipped them in a grain of salt and drank the buttermilk out of mugs.
