Thomas went home rejoicing and not even waiting for the day to break, he got a pick-axe and shovel and started to dig expecting to find a crock of gold. After digging for about four hours he was beginning to lose hope when his shovel struck a flat flag which he eagerly rose. Underneath lay a flat wooden box which he lifted carefully and laid on the ground, his heart beating with excitement. He then broke open the lid and instead of gold! what lay in the box but an awl, a hammer, a needle, a last and a lump of wax. The leprechaun in truth had given him a way of living but he was bitterly disappointed.
