Water-Cress and Nettles sometimes took the place of Cabbage for dinner - as they were easily got and plentiful.
Water-cress is found in the streams in the neighbourhood when well-boiled, it is nice to the taste and is considered very wholesome Some old people say it is as good as a "Doctor's Bottle" & when medicine was too dear these herbs took their place and the old people had great faith in their properties
Dandelion when boiled down was supposed to be a cure for the most stubborn cough - at least the juice extracted from it was supposed when mixed with honey to take the place of our more modern "Potent Cough Syrups". It is still in use.
