- The potato is a very nourishing food and is grown almost in every part of the country. About half an acre of ground is required to supply the wants of an ordinary family. When this amount is well manured it will yield at least three tons of potatoes fit for table and a ton of small ones for feeding pigs and for other purposes.
The farmer prepares the ground. When he intends to grow them in drills the lea must be dug to a considerable depth so as to bury the grass completely. When the time for planting comes the surface is made into drills which measure about twenty seven inches in width. Manure is spread in the hollows of th drills and the seed are placed over it about ten or twelve inches apart according to the richness of the soil. Both the manure and the seed are covered by splitting the drills.
