  1. When I went out that morning, my heart did jump with joy.
When I got decorated in a coat of corduroy
I thought I was a gentleman, till I saw my feet were bare
A second thought consoled me, I could run with any hare.
I met other boys along the line, and at every house did call
But to our great discomfort, the snow began to fall.
We hurried on along the line, there was no time to lose.
The winter's blast was cold and keen for none of us had shoes.
We reached what we called the school - room 'twas a woeful sight to see
There was no shelter, east or west, there was no bush or tree
We viewed the scene in silence, we might either weep or pray.
But a glance at the surroundings, showed us we could not stay
A forlorn band of fugitives, not knowing where to go.
