- Before the coming into such general use of paraffin candles, gas or electric light people in this district manufactured candles of their own and these were at least of two kinds that is to say Rush candles and Resin candles.To make Rush candles people cut bundles of the longest and thickest green rushes which they could find and having tied them up took them home and having carefully peeled the outer green bark off they proceeded to make a very novel sort of candle from the white porous core of the peeled rush.(continues on next page)
