There are the ruins of Nurney Castle in the townland of Nurney, in the parish of Monastrevan and in the barony of West Offaly. The castle was built beside the River Tully and it is only about 300 yards east from the Post office Nurney. The Fitzgeralds earls of Kildare, owned this castle. It afterwards passed into the hands of a man named Anderson. The unroofed building is to be seen now in front of where the old castle stood. Reynolds, the informer, used to call there and often remained for a night or two. There is supposed to be a tunnel under the River Tully. This tunnel goes from the castle to the Pigeon House. The Pigeon House is supposed to be build on an artificial hill and if excavations were made some interesting finds might come to light.
