He buys a large number of hides of cattle, sheep, and horses. When the hides are bought they are dressed with lime and hung up in lofts to dry and to let the air go through them. The dressing of lime prevents the hides from becoming stale. After 48 hours the hides are places in large vats and dressed in chemicals and after several days they are taken out and hung again to dry until they asume the form we know as a side of leather. The courser leather is used for boots and leggings, and the finer leather is used for book-binding, and glove-making. The tanner at Ballytore is over a hundred years old, Over fifty years before the railways and lorries were in vogue, the present Mr Cullen's father sent the sides of leather to Dublin by horse and cart a distance of sixty miles.
