John Hawkins, now an old and bedridden man living in Rathree near Galmoy, once cheered with his merry voice many a sad heart. His favorite songs were "The Boys of Wexford" The Stone outside Dan Murphy Boot, and "The Wearing of the Green". When he sang "ODonnell Abu", his listeners were said to be cheered and stirred with patriotic pride.
In those days Irish dance was as popular as it is to-day. Mr Hanlon, Johnstown, was a renoun dancing master. He arranged a certain week for each district and taught the pupils in their homes. He was able to jig for the dance and taught jigs, reels and waltzes, but none of the ball--room dances of which we hear so much about today.
Matt Corrigan, Galmoy, who could mow an acre of corn or hay in a day was considered the best mower in the Parish. He was challenged by a neighbour who thought he was better. A day was fixed and a prize of ten pounds was in store for the winner. Crowds gathered to see the contest. When the sun went down only Matt remained to finish his task. He won the prize. His opponent had given in about three hours before sun-set. Matt was easily the winner with more than an acre of hay mowed.
