- After the rebellion in 1916 there were ambushes between the Irish volunteers and the English soldiers. One of those battles was fought at Coolbawn and two of the leaders were killed. A third leader named George Dwyer led the remaining men to safety and he is now a Chef Superintendent in the Garda.
