The Famine (ar lean)
“The "Big Famine" which occurred during the years eighteen forty six and forty seven”
(ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)formed in the district, the principal leaders being John McLoughlin, Thomas Nangle and John Joe Curran. The league was proclaimed illegal, and the leaders were arrested and imprisoned for a considerable period.
The landlord never collected the rent himself, but he had a man named James Mullany employed to collect it. This man was far more cruel on the tenants than the landlord himself. After some time the landlord left the district and went to live in England leaving his agent in charge of the estate. During the landlord's absence he treated the poor unfortunate tenants with greater cruelty than ever. A man named who was living in the house, where we now live tried to shoot him because he took his land, but he did not succeed.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
