spits on blackberries, and other wild fruits on November night and that it is not right to eat any wild fruits after November night.
On St. John's night fires are made in honour of St. John. Early in the evening boys get turf and coals and make a big fire and they put a bone into it. When the fire is blazing all the boys and girls of the district gather together round the fire. They bring a fife, melodeon or some other musical instrument with them and some of the boys play and the rest of the boys and girls dance. When they are about to go home each takes a lighted sod of turf with him and he throws it into his meadow. Old people say that it is not right to quench a bonefire because it is lighted in honour of St. John.
