- I often heard my grandma talk about a hedge-school master that taught my grandfather. He lived on the road leading from Rathkeary to Lough Gara. His name was Master Connor and his hut was on the side of the road.
He had about forty pupils and he used to teach school at night. The boys used to bring rush candles. There were no lamps going at that time. Their seats were stones laid along by the wall and their pens were made from goose quills and they had slates for writing on and made their pencils from pieces of slate.
The pupils had very few books but there was one book known as the double spelling book. It gave the meaning of all the difficult words.
