- Potatoes are grown on the farm of Daniel Hoare. There is an acre or more grown each year. The land is ploughed and sometimes dug with a loy or spade. Wooden ploughs are not used lately but long ago they were used. The amount vary's nearly every year. Spades are not made locally. The potatoes are cut into pieces and a few eyes left in each those are called splits. When the stalks are beginning to come up the mould is shovelled with a shovel. In summer the stalks are sprayed with Blue-stone, and washing-soda this is done to prevent Blight. In Autumn the farmers dig them and the children picks them and puts and the big ones in one place and the little ones in another and there is a little mould put on them to keep them safe for the Winter. The people help one another to sow and dig the potatoes. Each sort of potatoes are sowed for themselves. Champions, Aran Banners Aran Chiefts Elephants Kerr's pink, Flounder's Queens.
