  1. Long ago there were quern-stones in nearly every house in this district. These stones were circular in shape and there was a hole through the centre of each one. The hole in the top stone was larger than the hole in the bottom one. A strong wooden stick about a foot long was driven into the hole in the bottom stone, and a handle was fitted in the side of the top stone.
    When wheat was to be ground a white sheet was laid on the table and the quern-stones were laid on top of this. The wheat was then poured in through the hole in the top stone
