- There was a great leader called John Irvine out against Cromwell. There was a great sum of money on his head. The English wanted his head to show it to the Irish soldiers and to put it up on spikes. For years they fought him and he killed many famous English soldiers.
One night he was coming whistling across the bog in Kilteevan when he was shot by a band of English soldiers and they ran off afraid. He was got by a man and brought to a house in Clooncagh where he died after a few hours. By morning the place was covered with soldiers wanting the dead body By great risk the Irish brought the body to Mearin They buried it there First they cut the sods and withered them for the English soldiers were madly tearing around looking for a fresh grave. They came to Clooncagh & the people were afraid they would get the grave so they took the body to the bog near the Shannon called "Black Banks" where the English never got it.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Faisnéiseoir
