- Long ago the monks from the Quaker Island used to meet the monks from Roscommon to pray.
They came across the Shannon on flag stones They used to pray where St Dermots well is now. One day St Dermot was praying and he got sleepy. He spied a little stream of water and he washed his eyes in it and just there a spring well sprung up. He said "This water will be good for the eyes" and it is believed that it is a good cure for sore eyes. People who have sore eyes come there and say certain prayers and wash their eyes in the water. - St Dermots well is in Portrun. People come with sore eyes to be cured. There is a pot of gold hidden under a stone in the well and there is an eel minding it and if you are able to kill the eel before he reaches the Shannon you will get the pot of gold.
Michael Lyster of Breacna went digging for the gold and he heard a call three times.- Bailitheoir
