In 1602 it was besieged by Sir Charles Wilmot, who had to retreat, but seeing the castle on fire returned and the garrison were forced to surrender unconditionally. That is the Wilmot who escaped the watchful eye of O'sullavane Beara in 1602 and slipped in through the Pass of Cairn[?] on Fhiadh to aid Carew's forces, then encamped at Guerees[?] near Bantry. Thus was Wilmot the ultimate cause of the capture of Dunboy Castle, the stronghold of the O'Sullivan, near Castletown Beare, and the retreat of O'Sullivan of Breffney, now County Cavan.
In May, 1650, Braghill, the Cromwellian General set out to capture the Castle of Macroom. it was then garrisoned by a force under the commandof the heroic Bishop of Ross. The Bishop, seeing the superior strength of the advancing army, concentrated his men in the park and set fire to the castle.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
