Some people are so convinced of the truth of the legend that even to this day a few believe that this is the reason why the mortar used in this castle has still such a hold, but the truth is that the making of mortar is a lost art like that of embalming, and we cannot in our modern day make make it like the ancients used, except we use cement largely in its manufacture. It is surprising that this castle is still in such a state of good presentation as it has always been exposed to all weather , being never roofed. It has a most imposing appearance, with a handsome tower at each of its corners, and indeed we cannot blame Donough McCarthy if he was a little vain and self-conceited about it.
