   Fort Charles
   One of the most romantically situated spots in Kinsale Harbour is Fort Charles, so named in 1681 by the Duke of Ormond as a tribute to Charles II. This fort took nearly twelve years to build and cost over £10,000, a very considerable sum of money in those days. Of its former grim and forbidding strength, little now remains, but in the good old days of Fort Charles a hundred cannons were mounted in its bomb-proof enclosures, and ships sailing up the harbour had to pass within easy hailing distance. Even in times of infrequent peace of the seventeenth century one regiment of foot soldiers was always quartered in the fort. Before the form was built there was situated on the opposite side of the harbour a block house or fort which had a not inconsiderable armament. Both forts were captured
