The potatoes are dug during October with spades or ploughs. The big ones are picked into buckets, and put into pits, while the small ones are put into bags and given to pigs or to other animals. The pits are usually made in the field in which the potatoes were grown. They are about two feet wide, half-foot in depth and can be made as long as required.
The potatoes planted are: Champions, Kerr's Pinks, Arran Banners, and Epicures. Arran Banners, and Kerr's Pinks grow best in this district. - There are two holy wells in this parish of Aghinagh - one at the foot of Mushera Mountain near Ballinagree and the other at Derryroe, Rusheen.
The former is known as St. John's Well, while the other is called "The Red Well" or Tobar Dearg".
