Weather Lore
Rays from the sun indicate fine weather. If it sets with a red light its a sign of fine weather and if it sets with a pale light it brings bad weather. An innumerable lot of bright glittering stars brings the following day fine. Black clouds are a sign of rain but bright clouds are a sign of good weather. A rainbow in the morning indicates showers of rain and "a rainbow at evening is the shepherd's delight". The south west wind brings a storm or rain and the north wing brings a storm.
When birds fly high it is a sign of fine weather but if they fly low it is a sign of bad weather. If they come inland it is a bad omen as we are about to get bad weather or a storm.
When cattle lie beside a ditch bellowing it indicates an approach of a storm. If the dog eats grass or if the cat turns his back to the fire it is a sign that the forthcoming weather will be bad.
