- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)the year 1847. It did not come very hard upon the people of this parish but it did a great deal of damage in the Skibbereen parish. This district was very thickly populated before the famine. When the famine came it killed about half of its inhabitants. There are a lot of old houses all over this parish. Those houses were all occupied before the famine but when the famine came all the poor people living in those houses died of hunger when the potatoes failed for it was on potatoes and milk they lived. The soft weather brought the blight and the poor people did not know what it was for they never saw the likes of it before. The potatoes turned black in the ground and the people left them there without digging because they were not good to them to eat. The people had no seed to set the next year but seed came to them from other countries. The potatoes were scattered all around the fields in order that they would grow plenty but they got black again the next year and it was then all(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
