- We have a spinning wheel. It belonged to my grandmother and is over 50 years in the house. It was used by my grandmother to spin the thread used by her in making trousers coats waistcoats petticoats and stockings for her family.
My grandfather always kept sheep - both black and white. When they were shorn the wool was carded at home and then spun. Most of the neighbours had spinning wheels, but ours is the only one now left in the district. It is still worked by my mother, who this year took the wool to be carded to Baile-an-Gaorthaidh and then spun it on the spinning wheel at home. We made stockings jumpers petticoats and cardigans out of the wool.
