They used have a supply of splinters to give light around the yard on winter nights, these were got from the fir blocks which they used dig out of the bogs, there used light very readily when dry, but they gave off a dense smoke. They also had candles (made locally) & dips (made by dipping the candle wick several times in melted tallow) and rushlights (made from the pith of rushes dipped in melted tallow).
