- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)They had a kind of top long ago; they called it "te-to-tum".
It was made of wood; it had four sides, and it had a pointed part for spinning it.
They used agree to put down a certain number of buttons or clothes pegs, or very occasionally, half-pence.
A was marked on one side of the top
P on another side
N " " "
T " " "
They used spin the top in turn & when it stopped spinning, if A was turned up it meant "Take All" (the buttons or whatever they were playing for
P meant "Put down".
N meant "Nothing"
T meant "Take One".
They used decide to finish the game at a certain time, & whoever would have the most buttons then, would win the game.
It was called "te-to-tum", because they used say "te-to-tum" as the top was spinning.- Bailitheoir
