“There is a leather tanning factory in Dunmanway Co Cork.”
There is a leather tanning factory in Dunmanway, Co. Cork. Mostly all the hides used there were cattle hides. When a large number of hides are collected they are put into a tank, and pickle and salt thrown in with them. They are left there until the hair falls off the hides. Then they are run through different kinds of machinery. After a time they are soaked in water and are beaten to toughen the hides. Then the hides are run secondly, and are beaten till they are made into leather. It is made into boots and shoes, which are sent to the shop to be sold.
