- (continued from previous page)the shells were pieces of gold. Even though this theory may have been incorrect, when the shells were removed, the hound was seen no more. There was a legend that Danish loot was hidden in a fort of my uncle's at Kilgarriff, a few miles from Clonakilty. Having dreamed three night in succession about this loot, three of my grand-uncles went to dig it. They had gone fairly deep, when the spades struck something hard, and they heard the ring of metal. Scarcely had this happened, when a mournful wail was heard opposite them. It came rapidly near them, but it came very near them, and they took to their heels. Early next day, they came to look for the hole they had dug, but it was nowhere to be seen, and to this day it has never been discovered.
