    the dresser. Many men were killed and cows were rigid in their head ropes. It is said that traces of snow were found on the sides of fences as late as Saint John's day.
    The year 1839 is known as the year of "The Big Wind". It blew from the west with undreamt of force. Terrible damage was done to trees, stock and houses. Traces of salt were found as far inland as Tipperary. Boulders, some weighing five tons, were disturbed on the western coast.
    We have unusually bad weather ar present and although we have not yet reached the middle of October wintry winds can be heard moaning and torrents of rain fall.
