    There a fast horse 'commandeering'
Of the reins he quickly takes hold.
Away with the horse and the rider
Like the famous John Gilpin of old.
Now the soldiers are completely baffled
Not a trace of him now can they find
For the bolden brave hare of the mountain
Has vanished and left them behind.
You may talk of the Boys of Kill-Michael,
Or tell of the Boys of Kildare
But give three cheers for our own Captain Collins
Who is known as the 'Wild Mountain Hare'.
The subject of this poem is Mr James D.P. Collins of Barleyhill in the parish of Newmarket, Co Cork. He is better known locally as Jim Dan Pad and also as the Mountain Hare
During the Civil War period (1922) his house was attacked by a party of over 100 'Free Staters' in broad daylight. He succeeded not only in breaking through the party while returning the fire but also of escaping unhurt. This poem was composed by Mary Guiney a servant girl and at the time was employed by William McAuliffe of Meenishal, Meelin Co. Cork. (I got the foregoing from Diarmuid McAuliffe. son of Wm McAuliffe.)
