Limestone. The landlords built a kiln in every townland for the use of the tenants. The used to draw the limestone from Taur and Meelin. Usually in the Winter the lime was burnt. There was a man kept in the kiln to keep it in order.
The stones were broken small and there was turf and sometimes culm mixed through it. The kilns are got ready and a layer of turf is put in then a layer of limestone until it is filled. Then a fire is made in the eye of the kiln and that sets fire to the turf and lime in the kiln. When the lime is burned it is drawn from the eye of the kiln and carried away to be used for manure on land or for lime washing. The kiln is often filled with layers so that while it is burning a man is continually breaking the lime stone and getting the turf ready to refil it.
