- Long ago, during the Shrove period, most marriages took place in Kanturk and the surrounding country. During the past few years, this custom has died out. Shrove Tuesday was the day most marriages took place on. Very few people get married in the months of May and August as they are looked upon with suspicion as being unlucky.Up to some years ago, it was the custom of young men to wait for girls over twenty years of age, and if they would succeed they usually took the girls to Skellig, which meant throwing a rope around them and dragging them to the river and throwing them in. Whenever there were girls of marriageable age in houses some of the boys would go and keep banging on the doors, and if they did not receive an answer they pulled or(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
