In former times people never wore boots until they were grown up. The shoes were made locally by shoemakers. About fifty years ago there were nine shoemakers in Kanturk, in the barony of Duhallow, County Cork. At the present time there are only four shoemakers in Kanturk, the reason being that there are many boot factories in the country.
One family of these shoemakers got the trade from their fathers before them.
Clogs were worn locally also, by farmers and working men.
Leather was also tanned in Kanturk where the present creamery is situated. It is still known as the "tan-yard".(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
