The existing territory of the north of Mallow and eastward to the borders of Waterford belonged to the O Kefffees, princes of Dermoy who claimed descent from the Ancient kings of Ireland.

Dromagh Castle was erected by the O Keffees, Near here was fought the last battle in Munster during the rebellion of 1641.It was the chief home of the O Keffees who were the overlords from Banteer to the upper Blackwater between Ratmore and Meanganine. The last of the O Keffees turned protestants.
In 1641 Hugh O Keffee was the owner of the castle. His son Daniel took part with James II in the wars of 1690. After the defeat of the Boyne he was outlawed and his estates were taken from him and sold.
