- In the townland of Kiltane on the north side of Freemount there was a place called Ard na Croise where there were numerous houses. A pedlar used frequent this place very often, and for some reason or another he was suspected as a spy. It happened that this pedlar was murdered one night by some person who used a "grafán" or "grub" in carrying out this wicked act. The grub was common property and it passed from neighbour to neighbour, according as one wanted it. The person suspected of the murder was he who had the 'grub; last in his possession.
