- Great consternation was caused in Buttevant on the night of the burning of the great flour mill, which took place in August 1931. It has since been ascertained what caused the burning ; a fallen electric wire which fused. On this never - to - be - forgotten night the mill bell, which was rung but twice daily, pealed forth loudly. One of the men on night duty gave the alarm. At once a crowd of people were on the scene, and were amazed to find the mill on fire. The flames spread rapidly, and tons of food-stuffs, maize, corn, wheat and flour as well as all the valuable machinery and coal were destroyed.The Cork Fire Brigade was immediately summoned but by the time it arrived the whole building was one blaze. There was an oil-tank in the lower part of the building which was fortunately saved, if this had taken fire the whole mill would(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
