    When the Creagh family came here towards the end of the twelfth century, they settled on Knockahur hill, and drew the old settlement thither. The real history of Doneraile is very closely intertwined with that of the noble family of Synan, who appear to have been of French extraction. They settled here after leaving Killolane, near Charleville, where they founded an abbey, where the Cogans held sway near the fort of Rathgoggan. In the thirtheenth, fourteenth, and fiftheenth centuries, they were a family of great importance, and power and had built the castles of Richardstown (called after its founder Mac Richard Synan)
