- In this district of Castletownroche travelling people call to the homes of the people and they have been doing so for many years. Some of these people are very poor and others are not.
They carry baskets with them in which they keep the articles they have for sale. Some of the articles are lace, studs, hair grips, prayer books, and badges. People buy these articles from them.
They buy the goods in the big towns. House-holders have great welcome for these people and long ago they remained longer than a night at a time. The farmers used to keep them and generally gave them a bed in the kitchen and also their food. They accepted any alms given to them.
Some of these people travel on foot other have caravans.
The names of the best known of them are Sheridans, Tom Keane, Paddy Gaddy, Mary the bags and the Smiths.
The Sheridans make gallons and other articles out of Tin. They travel about in a caravan drawn by a donkey.
Tom Keane sells laces, studs, pins and hair grips and Paddy Gaddy sells the same things.
