- The old houses long ago were thatched. How they got the thatch was they made it out of rushes and sedges which they got on the banks of rivers. The old houses had a settle bed in the kitchen and it was the servant boy or girl that used sleep in it.
The fire was usually at the Gable wall. The chimneys were made of clay and wattles and some of the houses had no chimneys but a hole was made in the roof and some of them had no windows but a hole in the wall and a piece of strong paper was used instead of glass.
The floor was made of mud and paved with small stones and the kind of brushes they used was one the made of heather.
