“In Ringaskiddy candles were made from rushes and tallow.”
In Ringaskiddy candles were made from rushes and tallow. The rushes were cut and withered in the sun. When ships were wrecked at sea tons of tallow were washed ashore. The local people took the tallow, kept some and sold more of it to their neighbours. They removed the skin of the tallow, put it into boiling oil and left to melt. They then drained the oil from the tallow. A withered rush was held in the centre of a mould and the melted tallow poured into the mould around the rush and left to harden. When hard it was a candle.- Bailitheoir
