- The population in the year 1600 was very small, it was only about a half a million because the people were starved and persecuted and driven to other countries during the reign of Queen Elizabeth and Cromwell.
In olden times, in Ireland the chief food of the people was that provided by corn of some kind. The people ground the corn they grew because they depended on it. They used a hand-mill which was called a "Quern". A quern consisted of two flat grooved round stones one on top of the other the upper one being moveable.- Collector
