- Shops were not common in olden times. People had to go to the nearest town to make purchases. Buying and selling was carried on after Mass. This is not still practised. Boots, shoes, butter, eggs and fowl were sold in this way.
Money was not always given in exchange for goods. Goods were bartered in the district. Labour was given in exchange for goods.
It was considered unlucky or totally prohibited to transact business on certain days. These days were Mondays and Thursdays. The markets were held in the towns. Some of the markets are still held there. There are accounts of hucksters and pedlars and dealers in featers and rags who visited the district in former times. They still come. Some coins and types of money have gone out of use. The fourpenny bits and tenpenny bits and half soverigns and soverigns have gone out of use.- Bailitheoir
