    highest view over the river. There is only another mound of this kind in Ireland, and that is near Ballyduff, Youghal. There was an underground passage way going under the mound, and right across the river to Ballyannon Wood, but it is at present closed, as some eighteen years ago, the ground over the passage fell in. A bar was put down the hole to see how deep it was, but it was never found, and it took cart loads of stones to fill in the passage. The portion of the passage crossing the river is dredged away now, and the remaining entrances are filled up with mud.
    There is a legend about the mound which says that monks, and chalices are supposed to be buried under it.
    Long ago there was a bridge from the wood to the graveyard where the church was. The people used come across from Ballyannon to attend mass. A Story tells that once while the priest was celebrating mass, the people heard the Cromwellian Soldiers coming. They rushed for the bridge, but the soldiers broke down the bridge & the people fell into the water and were drowned. The priest had barely time to bury the chalice in a hiding hole. It is supposed to be buried under the mound or mount.
