- The month of May is decicated to Our Lady Queen of the May as the name of the month shows. Many May Customs are kept in Ireland by the old people, such as May Bough. A Branch oft the lime tree which is in bloom is cut down and put up on the front door and this bough is supposed to keep away the sickness of the year.Another May Custom is the May Basket. On May Eve all the children decorate their Baskets with coloured papers and ribbons and go around from house to house collecting money. They say to the people of the house "Something for the May Basket Please". On May Sunday they go to the wood and have a picnic in honour of Our Lady. Another one is the May Queen. It is held on the first Sunday of May. It is a very popular amusement for all the children.
There are also other Customs such as the Brat Brigit. It is said that on St Brigit's Eve a piece of unwashed linen is put outside the front door and that St Brigit passes and leaves her blessing on the piece of linen and it is suppose to keep away sickness of the year.
